AIF Business Development Workshop: Private Equity for Sustainable Infrastructure (Open Event)

Objectives

  • Promote the private equity asset class and its contribution to catalyze private capital into infrastructure investments in emerging markets.
  • Discuss how different types of private equity investments can help accomplish AIIB’s objectives. 
  • Strengthen the image of AIIB among European investors as an active debt and equity capital provider and position the Bank as the “go-to” institution for quality private equity investments into infrastructure and other productive sectors. 
  • Business generation through an Infrastructure Showcase session and online proposals collected before the event. 

 

Background

Private equity investments are part of AIIB’s mandate and a great opportunity to bring managers and investors together to take stock of the asset class’s contribution to private capital mobilization for infrastructure, and to discuss challenges and opportunities.

 

Separately, the Asian private equity sector is a fast-moving space where numerous innovative financing structures evolve and are tested. The topics discussed will address the growing interest from European institutional investors on Asia’s private equity and potentially attract additional private capital into the region.

 

This workshop will also consider how the participation of development finance institutions in private equity funds can enhance the environmental and social aspects of portfolio investments, an area that investors have growing interest in.

 

The workshop will also leverage in Luxembourg's status as a center of European institutional investors such as pension fund, insurance companies and sovereign wealth funds. The workshop aims to highlight eligible investment platforms for these institutional investors.

  • A moderated panel discussion with opening remarks.
  • Q&A from the audience.
  • Infrastructure Fund Showcase - business plan presentation of preselected proposals submitted online, followed by comments and feedback by senior staff. 

 

Speakers

Sanjit Bakshi

Director, Oriental Structural Engineers Pvt. Ltd

 

Sanjit Bakshi is the Director on the board of Oriental Structural Engineers Pvt. Ltd., OSE Infrastructure Limited and Central Park Estate Limited. Under his leadership, the company first ventured into public private partnership (PPP) projects and won three highways projects in India.  Since then, Mr. Bakshi has been instrumental in the growth of the company and has managed to build the portfolio of roads and highways projects in India to over USD2.5 billion within a period of approximately 11 years. Mr. Bakshi has also enabled the company's diversification into real estate industry.

 

Mr. Bakshi graduated in finance and entrepreneurial management from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and has an MBA degree from the Columbia Business School 


Jin-Yong Cai

Managing Partner, Emerging Markets, Global Infrastructure Partners

 

Dr.Cai is a partner at Global Infrastruture Partners (GIP), with a focus on emerging markets.  Prior to GIP, he was with TPG, World Bank Group, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley.  From 2012 to 2016, he was the CEO of International Finance Corporation of the World Bank Group.  While in Goldman Sachs from 2000 to 2012, he was a partner and led the China business.  In Morgan Stanley from 1994 to 2000, he was a team member which started China International Capital Co, the first investment bank in China and the joint venture with Chinese partners.  Dr. Cai started his career at the World Bank Group in 1990.  Dr. Cai received bachelor's degree from Peking University and doctoral degree from Boston University. 


Ayesha Aziz Khan

Managing Director and CEO, Summit Power International Limited

 Ayesha Aziz Khan is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer and was appointed to the Board on 22 July 2016. Ms Khan has extensive experience in the power sector of the country, specifically in the financial management of power generation companies. In her career, she has led in the financial management of multiple power projects. She was a Director of Finance Management of Summit Power Limited from 2003 to 2005, a Director of Summit Prakasa Asia Pte Ltd from 2004 to 2017, a Director of Summit Infrastructures Pte Ltd from 2005 to 2017, and a Finance Director of Summit Power Limited from 2007 to 2011. From 2011 to 2016, she was also the Group Finance Director of Summit Corporation Limited and Ms Khan is currently also a non-executive director in several companies of Summit Group.


Dongik Lee

DG, Investment Operations Department III, AIIB

 

Mr. Lee is Director General at the Investment Operations Department of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). Before Joining AIIB, he was Corporate Advisor for Temasek, Singapore. In 2008-2013, he worked for Korea Investment Corporation as Chief Investment Officer and Head of Alternative Investments. Before that, Mr. Lee spent five years as Head of Investment at STIC Investments, a private equity/venture capital firm in Korea, where he was in charge of managing the Korea Global IT Fund, one of Korea's first global venture capital funds. In 1997-2001, he was Head of Overseas Investment Team at Samsung Life Insurance. In 1987-1997, he worked as Emerging Equity Market Analyst at the International Finance Corporation. Mr. Lee has a bachelor's degree in economics from Korea University, an MBA in finance and investments and a master's degree in management information systems from George Washington University.


Erh Fei Liu

Chief Executive Officer, Asia Investment Fund Management Limited

 

Mr. Liu has over 30 years of investment banking and private equity experience across various geographies, including Greater China, USA, Southeast Asia and India. Prior to establishing the AIC Group, Mr. Liu served as the Chairman of China for Bank of America Merrill Lynch.  Mr. Liu established the Chinese business and held various management positions at Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch and other renowned institutions. Mr. Liu also acted as a financial advisor to a wide range of governmental entities, major Chinese companies, as well as leading multinational corporations. Mr. Liu's transaction experiences span from capital raising on international capital markets to equity investments and domestic or cross-border M&A. Mr. Liu holds an MBA degree from Harvard Business School.


Raja Parthasarathy

Managing Director, Morgan Stanley

 

Raja Parthasarathy is a Managing Director and Co-Head of Morgan Stanley India Infrastructure. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley in 2014 Raja was a partner at IDFC Private Equity. He earlier worked with Jet Airways, UBS, Goldman Sachs and Lehman Brothers. Raja received an MBA from INSEAD, an MA in Economics from Tufts University and a BA from Hamilton College.

Lito Camacho

Former Secretary of Finance Philippines, AIIB International Advisory Panel member

 

Jose Isidro N. (Lito) Camacho is a Managing Director in the Asia Pacific Division of Credit Suisse, based in Singapore. He is also the Vice Chairman for Credit Suisse Asia Pacific.

 

Mr Camacho joined Credit Suisse in March 2005 after a distinguished career in government and international banking. He was Secretary of Finance for the Philippines in 2001-2003. Prior to that, Mr Camacho was the Secretary of Energy for the Philippines.

 

Prior to joining the government, Mr Camacho was a Managing Director and Chief Country Officer for Deutsche Bank, Philippines. And before with Bankers Trust Company for over 22 years in New York, Japan, Hong Kong, Philippines and Singapore.

 

Mr Camacho obtained his Bachelor's degree in mathematics (cum laude) from De La Salle University in 1975. He received his MBA with concentration in Finance from Harvard University in 1979.  On February 2017, Mr Camacho was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Business Administration from Eastern Asia University, Thailand.
