INFORMATION - LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND
Liverpool
Liverpool is known the world over for its strong maritime history, well-documented musical heritage, and sporting heroes. There are so many tangible reasons to visit this City.
With it's success as European Capital of Culture in 2008 Liverpool has shown the world the best of its creative thinking and interesting cultural attractions. It has more than its fair share of landmarks and is one of the few cities to have two cathedrals, the Anglican and Metropolitan, which are linked by the appropriately named 'Hope Street'.
Liverpool is the birthplace of The Beatles with an estimated 600,000 people visiting the City each year just for The Beatles. It is also the World Capital of Pop according to the Guinness Book of Records. It was also designated a World Heritage City by UNESCO in July 2004, placing the City's famous Waterfront alongside Stonehenge and the Great Wall of China as one of the world's most important places.
The City was built on trade - gaining a great deal of its architecture and cosmopolitan spirit from the sea captains, merchants and entrepreneurs of the 18th and 19th centuries, from its role as a launch-pad to the 'New World' of North America, and its place at the heart of industries such as ship building on the Wirral and glass production in St Helens.
The Waterfront is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and walking along the city centre parades, it is easy to see why. Added to the mix of these trade related icons are the new developments - a Cruise Liner Terminal, that welcomes some of the largest cruise vessels in the world; The Liverpool Echo Arena and BT Convention Centre, where leading names in music, sport and show business can perform for thousands, and the New Museum of Liverpool (opening 2010), telling the story of the city and the way it has influenced the world around it in a brand new landmark building.
Airport Information
For many delegates Manchester airport will be the most accessible and is only a 40 minute transfer from the city by taxi. Liverpool John Lennon Airport is located 7 miles from Liverpool City Centre, adjacent to the River Mersey. The journey time to the city is approximately 25 minutes depending on traffic.
